Commerce City VP in the news

Suncor’s VP of Refining in the U.S. was named to Denver Business Journal’s annual Who’s Who in Energy list

Yes, that was our Commerce City refinery VP you spotted in the Denver Business Journal this year.

Shelley Powell, vice president Refining, U.S., was named to the journal’s annual ‘Who’s Who in Energy’ list. The list recognizes “people whose position, knowledge or expertise helps guide the sector,” calling them important to Denver and Colorado’s energy sector.

Shelley was also featured in a story about locally manufactured products. In the ‘Made in Colorado’ feature, Shelley talked about the refinery’s role in the local economy and what we’re doing to meet government regulations and other challenges.

“Participating in stories like these can help create awareness of the value Suncor brings to the communities where we operate,” Shelley says.

“In addition to being an important part of Suncor’s overall business, the Commerce City refinery is Colorado’s only refinery,” she explains. “We supply about 35%of Colorado’s gasoline and 55% of the diesel used in the state, and we’re a large asphalt supplier for Colorado’s roads. The refinery is a critical component of the local energy infrastructure as well as a neighbor in the community – and we take pride in both.”

In the article, Shelley talks about weathering a challenging business climate by carefully managing the key aspects we can control – particularly safety, reliability, environmental performance and costs. She credits Suncor’s local workforce, as well as investments made in the refinery, for helping position it for long-term success.
