For the second time in three years, Suncor’s East Coast business has received the Gold award in the Oil and Gas category of the Canada’s Safest Employer Awards.

The annual awards are presented by Canadian Occupational Safety magazine to organizations committed to fostering a culture of safety. The official announcement can be found here.

“When we received this award the first time, we were so pleased that our commitment to safety was being recognized,” says Shawn Langdon, offshore installation manager, Upstream Exploration & Production (E&P). “To receive the award for a second time, reinforces that the dedication and commitment that our workforce and leadership have towards instilling a strong safety culture is valued by Canadian safety experts.”

Through the award submission, the business emphasized how Suncor’s Operational Excellence Management System drives personal and process safety and that no work is executed without a disciplined and structured approach. It’s through this approach that the business achieved zero recordable injuries on the East Coast in 2017 – a year that was considered to have an elevated risk profile operationally due to the increased level of field activity. Here is a summary of some of the major projects that took place and were executed safely leading to the award:

  • A drilling rig was brought into Canadian waters from Norway, moving directly to location in the Terra Nova field to commence operations
  • Successfully completing a diving support program
  • Relocating the St. John’s office
  • Increased logistics to transport supplies, equipment and personnel offshore.

With strong leadership and a commitment from the whole team to work safely and recognize that all incidents are preventable, it’s no wonder that the business is being recognized for this commendable award again. This attitude is foundational on our Journey to Zero.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment and I’m so proud of the team for achieving this safety award yet again,” says Steve Hogan, acting senior vice-president, E&P. “This award recognizes the team’s dedication to living our values and maintaining our strong focus on safety.”

Congratulations, East Coast team!
