Being a good neighbour

Suncor is always seeking every means possible to treat any emissions odours from the Montreal refinery. We have recently turned to PR'eautech, a firm specialized in odour management.

Suncor’s Montreal refinery is determined to minimize odours circulating inside and outside our property. As a first step, we always look to reduce emissions odours at the source.  To do this, we continue to investigate new technologies that can help. We are now using technologies that significantly minimize some of the odours we emit during certain cleaning or upgrading operations.

The technology provided by PR'eautech, a Quebec firm specializing in odour management, uses neutralizing products and formulas that they disperse with fans or showers from our properties and the area where emissions or odours have been identified. They can also use misting, wetting and washing techniques, dry steam techniques and odour neutralizing gel plates. Their patented products respond to smelly compounds by foaming the molecules into the air so that they are neutralized, unscented and non-toxic.

“We work to minimize any odours and we act quickly when odours are produced during certain critical periods, like annual maintenance. We know that smells can be annoying – even when they are within the regulatory guidelines and our operating licence,” says Catherine Gaulin, Manager, EH&S, Suncor Montreal refinery.

Odours from our refinery are not toxic or harmful according to health standards. Odour perceptions can vary from one person to another. Yet, at Suncor, we take every measure possible to reduce the nuisances caused to our neighbours. By using these innovative processes provided to us by PR'eautech, we are taking another step to being a good neighbour. We also make numerous visits to the surrounding streets to assess and manage these nuisances, keep the citizens up-to-date, and continue to develop good relations with them.
